Maclean's: The Murphy bed gets a makeover

Conceived in Calfornia in the early 20th century, Murphy beds peaked in popularity in the 1920s and resurged in the ’70s as a recession and other factors forced Americans to live on less. Now shifts in urban living are driving the revival. For 27 years, B.O.F.F. Wall Bed Furniture has sold custom-built wall beds. Founded in Montreal, the company has branches in Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto and Boston.

Toronto Star: Doing double duty

At B.O.F.F Wall Bed Furniture on Sheppard Ave. W., wall beds can be ordered in single, double and queen size. A double Murphy bed that can accommodate a nine-inch mattress starts at $1,300 including installation (cost does not include the mattress).

The company, which manufactures its wall beds in Quebec, has been in business for the past 24 years and sells its units primarily to condos in the Toronto area, says owner Marco Fontaine.

Metro: Tuck in your bed at night

B.O.F.F. Wall Bed Furniture is the largest manufacturer of wall beds. Since 1986, the company has manufactured custom-made wall beds from scratch and, in fact, supplies parts to other manufacturers from their Quebec factory.

The company has six stores across Canada, including one in the Greater Toronto Area. Owner Marco Fontaine says 60 per cent of B.O.F.F.'s business comes from condo owners.

The Record: Furnishings that save space

"With so many condo and loft units being built in smaller sizes, there is a growing market for products that make the best use of space. B.O.F.F. in Concord, for instance, manufactures wall units that include shelving, closet space, pull-out desks and pull-down beds."
